Asam stearat diproses dengan memperlakukan lemak hewan dengan air pada suhu dan tekanan tinggi. Asam ini dapat pula diperoleh dari hidrogenasi minyak nabati. Dalam bidang industri asam stearat dipakai sebagai bahan pembuatan lilin, sabun, plastik, kosmetika, dan untuk melunakkan karet. Titik lebur asam stearat 69.6 °C dan titik didihnya 361 °C. Reduksi asam stearat menghasilkan stearil alkohol
